The following poems are a selection from a collection I call
Brief Verses of
Reflective Moments

Benefits of State
   --Wanda Hartley Butts 4/8/2005

But the angel of the Lord by night
opened the prison door,
and brought them forth. (Acts 5:19)

Demonic activity occurs
in the sub-cultures
of this world.

But, the eye of faith
knows the operation
of the angelic glory
from a superior civilization.

Coarse?  of Course!
   -- Wanda Hartley Butts

Some souls are so dead,
Poems for a
Good and Happy Life,
they never read!

Getting By Right
    --Wanda Hartley Butts 6/3/2005

In this life we may say
we are “just getting by,”
and it may be true, but
we each need to ensure
we are getting by right—
with Christ; since…
without Him we are…
nothing.

God’s Angels
    --Wanda Hartley Butts

T’s a sweet and sound secret
that we are under supervision;
The Lord sends his angels to see
to the care of his own on earth.

So keep this to remind you
that you are in his mighty hands:
who, when needed,
sends angels to protect
his people from harm.

Heavenly Canto
    -- Wanda Hartley Butts

I have learned that,
if it is my will,
that God’s will be done,
His purposes will
teach me
the poetry of life

Help Dispatcher
    -- Wanda Hartley Butts

Saints, if troubles beset you
and tears clouds your vision,
hurry to tell your Father
who send angels on mission.

Holy Trinity
    -- Wanda Hartley Butts

Where real lovers are,
there is a Third,
to keep them in Love.

Where two or three are gathered together
in my name there am I in the midst of them.
Matt 18:20

Lesson Learned
    --Wanda Hartley Butts 4/7/2005

She wanted to learn
to play the piano.
She took lessons,
but then,
she learned it was work
instead of just enjoyment.

As the years passed,
she enjoyed life--
did nothing requiring
effort on her part.
She came to the end
of her song without music.

Poetic Truth
    --Wanda Hartley Butts /2/2005

The best things in life
are free,
and so is poetry:
all the poet
has to do
is grasped it,
and write it down.

On the Rise
   -- Wanda Hartley Butts 8/5/03

Glance from earth to heaven
And see the glory between;.
Perceive that from heaven to earth
more glory will descend.

Aspire from earth to heaven;
brave the brief span in between
Participate in heaven to earth
and think about grand ascend.

Sweet Communion
-- Wanda Hartley Butts

Have you ever gone to visit  8
and learned to read music  6
playing from a soul? 5

Have you ever spent a minute 8
hearing just one lone note  6
singing from the heart?  5

Have you ever counted measure
of another’s rhythm; 6
known their poetry? 5

The Irony of It All
-- Wanda Hartley Butts

People sucked into economy
waste themselves
for more.
People sitting at the feet of God
go away rich,
rested.

Life Lights
   --Wanda Hartley Butts 7/28/2007

I visited two dying souls one day:
     one still on the go
but with the light of life done gone;
     the other ending
but with living light
     still shining.

Redemptive Power
   --Wanda Hartley Butts9/11/2006

Do some dark elements test your mind?
Speak low and walk you slow?
Don’t return to dig up that which is dead:
for now it stinks the more!. Walk ahead;
miss not the blooming flowers’ perfume.

Eternal Purpose
--Wanda Hartley Butts 9/11/2006

I cannot effectively live
desiring love others cannot give,
but can, for the love Someone gave
to save me from certain grave.

The Perks of Prayer
Wanda Hartley Butts 2/19/2009

Prayer slides the clouds aside;
we see the ladder Jacob saw.
Faith and love begin the climb
to gain the blessings from above.

Running on Ignorance
Wanda Hartley Butts 2/27/2009

Regret trails those who say,
“I don’t need to be taught what to do;
I will make up our own mind.”
How can a person make good choices,
if he/she refuses to learn their options?

Widow’s Lot
--Wanda Hartley Butts 12/24/2007

I live in a house;
I have lots of things,
but I am homeless.
Father dead;
Mother is too.
My husband gone.
I can’t reach the children
on their cell phones.
Tomorrow is Christmas
Ah, Hope, Emmanuel!

Party Poopers?
--Wanda Hartley Butts 12/25/2007

I don’t feel like partying,
But I do feel like loving
and being loved.

But those who
are partying
are intolerable to
those who don’t party.

Purpose
--Wanda Hartley Butts 12/25/2007

I have a reason for living:
It isn’t for people;
It isn’t for comfort;
It isn’t for happiness.

It is for Jesus Christ.

Help Time Line
--Wanda Hartley Butts 12/25/2007

You said,
“If you are, sick call me
I am only an hour away.”

But how many hours
would it be before you
retrieved the message
from your cell phone?

Useless Faith
--Wanda Hartley Butts 12/25/2007

A person’s religion is vain
whose whole being
is not a testimony
for a God-given Holy life.

Adult Children Games
--Wanda Hartley Butts 12/25/2007

Why is it that when
A parent doesn’t meet
their children’s expectations,
the children
use their children
to effect guilt trips?

Life without God is Meaningless
Psalms 127:1,2 Arrangement  Wanda Hartley Butts 7/26/2008

Unless the Lord builds the house,
  they labor in vain who build it.

Unless the Lord guards the city,
  The watchman stays awake in vain.

It is vain to rise up early,
  To sit up late
  To eat the bread of sorrows;
For so He gives His beloved sleep.

Sensible Decision
--Wanda Hartley Butts 12/16/2008

It makes no difference to God
what a disgrace a person has been
if he/she comes to The Light;
but misery remains the human’s lot
if he/she refuses to leave the dark.

Dawn of Christmas
Wanda Hartley Butts 12/20/2008

The sinner says,
“The night is dark and I am far from home!”

But, day dawns,
“Here is Light and I can see to get there!”

Working Out Salvation
Wanda Hartley Butts 12/16/2008

What we become once God saves us
depends on our resolve and obedience.
God has great plans for our future,
but in order for him to carry them out,
he needs our cooperation. We need
to keep trusting; allowing Him to work.

First Class Jailbird
Wanda Hartley Butts 1/6/2009

You blind the world with your diamonds;
Charm people with your style; acquire
souls like toys and manipulate the rest..
Give, to gain; turn lovers into servants;
Ride smiling and watch others walk.

How cheap sold the blood-bought soul!

My Immeasurable Help
--Wanda Hartley Butts 10/3/2007

I cannot be God’s minister without Him:
His Word says the same old same old
until He reveals what’s new in it to me,
then shows me how to spread it to others.

The Power of Holy Word
Wanda Hartley Butts 4/27/2009

I read a message today
and was blessed
by what the man said,
but returned to the Word
to be better blessed
by what God said.

A Good Read
Wanda Hartley Butts 1/6/2009

Lord,

When I read what others write,
I don’t like the fluffy stuff
that makes me feel “good.”
I prefer the tough stuff
that makes me be “good.”

The Purpose of the Church
Wanda Hartley Butts 1/7/2009

The church does not teach people to be “good”;
it leads people to Christ who is the source
and power which enables them to live
in love and loyalty to God and others.

If Christmas Were Left Up To Me
Wanda Hartley Butts 12/11/08

If Christmas were left up to me
We would love each other without money;
Children would never cry:
we would never say “goodbye”.
Parents would be at home,
Which would glow with life,
as songs ring from the heart!
Red Birds dance in the snow,
as we ride down hill on sleds
and we awaken from dreams.

Better Bard
Wanda Hartley Butts 1/29/2009

If a poet
doesn’t think
outside the box;
poet can’t be poet.

Worshipful Attitudes
--Wanda Hartley Butts 2/7/2011

Certain attitudes initiate worship:

thankfulness for God’s presence in the world
and for his merciful goodness every day.

A sense of spiritual need and the knowledge
that no one, or nothing, but God can meet it.

A sense of indebtedness to Christ who loved us
and gave Himself for us, and in whose death
is our only hope and in His Attitude our  strength.

But, there is one more we must not ignore,
and that one is the attitude of self-sacrifice.

If worship is to truly be in spirit and in truth,
the idol of self must denied; offered up to God.

Without these attitudes, one may come to church,
but will go away no better than when he/she came.

   Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name:
   bring an offering, and come into his courts. Ps.96:8
